What is CBD?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol and it is a compound found in cannabis plants. Cannabidiol Oils are oils that contain Cannabidiol. CBD Oil is legal in 30 states that permit marijuana use for recreational and medicinal purposes. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is another compound in the cannabis plant found alongside CBD; however, THC is the compound that produces the “high” effect of marijuana and it is psychoactive.

Various Ways CBD Ingested

There remain serious questions and a lack of studies to show what happens when a person over indulges on CBD. Especially in the case of mistaking it for a snack or candy and not even realizing the CBD contained in the consumption.

  • Inhaling (smoking/vaping)
  • Using an aerosol spray (on cheeks and/or in the mouth
  • Placed inside oils and other liquids
  • Capsules
  • Edibles (honey sticks, gummy bears, etc.)

Although CBD is in a lot of things such as drops, capsules, teas, even lotions and creams, it is not yet approved by the FDA for any purpose. This means that the production and distribution of CBD products are not under federal regulation. Some CBD oil products may contain traces of THC. A study even found that two-thirds of CBD products sold online contained significant amounts of THC and did not accurately label the correct amount of CBD in the product. Only a few states have CBD production regulations and test for purity and strength; however, in other states where CBD production is not regulated, it is hard to tell what it may contain. CBD that is not regulated actually were found to contain things like fungus, pesticides, and impurities.

Why is CBD Dangerous?

CBD has many side effects such as:

  • inhibition of hepatic drug metabolism
  • dry mouth
  • low blood pressure
  • lightheadedness
  • drowsiness

CBD is dangerous to teenagers in many ways. An enzyme in the body called P450 is found in the liver and metabolizes different drugs. Large dosages of CBD can inhibit the metabolizing function of P450, which neutralizes the effects of other medicinal properties in the body. Cannabinoid receptors are in the submandibular glands which are responsible to producing saliva. Due to CBD’s effect on these glands when taken, it inhibits the amount of saliva produced which causes dry mouth. Dry mouth can also make the victim very thirsty. When CBD is taken in high doses it can also cause the blood pressure to drop within the first few minutes of it entering the bodily system. This drop in blood pressure from CBD can also cause lightheadedness. In high doses, CBD can also cause drowsiness, making your child not able to function at full capacity. However in low doses, it is a wake-agent and will keep your child awake if taken close to bedtime. Since a lot of CBD products are not regulated, sometimes they are not pure which makes them dangerous. When CBD is not 99% pure, it can contain traces of other cannabinoids that can affect your child in negative ways, such as THC which can cause your child to become dependent on it. CBD has also been noted to cause anxiety and depression in some users. It is even known to cause psychosis. CBD oil is originated from the cannabis plant and can be dangerous to teenagers.
