1.Plan Ahead

Even if you don’t consider yourself a “planner” it’s important to have an idea of what you want to do in case something comes up. Having a plan gives you a clear idea of what to expect. A simple to do list lets you know what is the most important thing first and is a realistic idea of what needs to get done.

This tip is in tandem with specific events or projects. Just like planning preparing ahead of time ensures your stress levels will be at a minimum. Going over what you’ll say or do helps to reinforce that you are in control. It will also help to visualize or plan ahead for different situations that may arise.

3.Breathe Deeply

Sit or stand up straight and take slow, deep breathes. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Breathing deeply allows more oxygen to reach your brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. This promotes calmness by bringing awareness away from worries in your head and quieting your mind.

4.Relax muscles

When stressed an easy way to reduce stress is do a few stretches or even take a hot shower! Relaxing your muscles decreases anxiety. This method is also great if you have trouble sleeping if you are nervous or anxious.

Exercise is a great technique for stress relief as it releases feel good chemicals like endorphins and dopamine. These are very similar to the chemicals released when under the influence of a substance. These chemicals help to provide euphoria and happiness.

6.Eat healthy

Believe it or not eating healthy can significantly reduce your stress. Eating fruits, vegetables and lean protein gives your body the fuel it needs to provide you with energy. Healthy eating habits help your body produce enough hormones and chemicals needed to keep you balanced.

7.Avoid abusing drugs and alcohol

This may seem like a no brainer but when faced with a stressful situation turning to old habits become easier. When stressed you should not consume any drugs or alcohol as their “feel good” effects are only temporary.
