Miami, Florida – March 5th, 2015 – Inspirations for Youth and Families (IYF), the premier teen addiction treatment center, has announced that it has submitted several Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos for entry into the “Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive,” student video contest. The purpose of the contest is to engage high school students in creating messages for safe driving. Broward County Public Schools is partnering with BECON-TV and the Broward Regional EMS Council to challenge schools and students to compete in the 2nd Annual Texting While Driving Video Competition.

“This was a phenomenal public involvement excercise for both our boy and girl teen students at Inspirations for Youth and Families teen treatment center,” said Karen Corcoran Walsh, owner of Inspirations for Youth and Families and Executive Producer of the video production. “The whole project taught our teens one important lesson – teen driving and texting can be a dangerous proposition and not only lead to a serious injury, but a fatality as well.”

The IYF teens had the luxury of being guided by Rubrik House, a Los Angeles video production company, who educated them on the inner-workings of video production. The co-owners Nicole Rodrigues and Micah Bradley taught the teens that the production of one 30-second PSA is a lot of work and takes a long time to complete. While the subject matter of the video was strong in content, it was important to get the point across to the teen’s on the serious consequences of texting and driving.

“I was amazed at how much time and effort it takes to create a video,” said one teen who participated in the contest. “After finishing the video I gained a clearer understanding of how an innocent text while driving can actually cost a driver their life. The bottom line is driving and texting can kill.”

IYF differs from many of the other teen treatment centers by offering the teens in recovery a dedicated educational online academy. Inspiration’s Academic Program recognizes the adversarial relationship between alcohol and drug abuse and academic performance. In response, Inspirations Teen Rehab has created an individualized academic program approach to working with teens in rehab and focus on each teens’ specific academic goals. We provide a small ratio of students to teacher education, further enhancing each student’s learning opportunity and experience while going through addiction or behavioral therapy.

About the Texting While Driving Contest

The competition is strictly for high school students in Broward County. Each PSA will be 30 to 60 seconds in length. All schools submitting video will have their PSA’s posted on BECON ON Demand/Edu-Vision cable station for students.

The winners of the Texting While Driving Video Competition will:

  • Have their video broadcast Tri-County on BECON-TV and be presented at a “Red Carpet” opening at a local movie theater.
  • Be recognized at the School Board and Broward County Commission Meeting.
  • Appear on “Teen Talk” BECON-TV.
