Harlem Globetrotter speaks to teens at South Florida Rehab
Ft. Lauderdale, FL March 20, 2015 – One of the world’s premier basketball dunkers and team member of the famed Harlem Globetrotters traveling basketball team took his talents to Inspirations for Youth and Families (IYF) premier teen treatment center. Brandon LaCue, more familiarly known as “Werm got Hopz,” talked to the kids and of course did what he does best – slam dunk for the teens at IYF.
Werm, who also stars on the And1 Live Streetball team put on a show and as an encore gave one of the teens a pair of his size eleven shoes at Joseph Carter Park, located at 1450 Sunrise Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale.
“We were delighted to have Werm show off his athletic talents to our teens at IYF,” said Karen Corcoran-Walsh, founder of Inspirations for Youth and Families teen rehab as well as the Cove Center for Recovery adult addiction treatment center. “The teen’s learned the all to important lesson that if you want to be great at anything it requires extreme discipline and dedication.”
Werm, who is considered by many to be one of the top three dunkers in the world, tantalized the crowd by jumping over four girls before slamming the ball down the basket. Please visit Werm’s photo gallery.
IYF has had star power speak to its teens including: Miami Dolphin Hall of Famer Nat Moore, former New York Jet Stevie Anderson, the voice of the Miami Dolphins Jimmy Cefalo and Guinness World Record holder Doctor Dribble.
So how did I guy named Brandon Lacue get the nickname Werm. There already is one Hall-Famer with the same alias – Dennis Rodman. Werm is quick to point out that it is spelled differently and he once met the former NBA bad-boy.
“My dad gave me that name (Werm). He has friends who own a Chinese restaurant and when I was born, he asked them what to call me,” Werm recalls. “They quickly replied ‘Wing Werm,’ and the name stuck.
His full nomiker is Werm Got Hopz, which is common in the Street Ball league with names like Hot Sauce, High Rizer, and “I’ll be right back.” If you do a Google search for Werm, you’re not going to see much text content because in his profession – high impact dunking – to know him is to watch him. He has hundreds of YouTube videos on the World Wide Web – showcasing his wide assortment of signature dunks.
Werm’s association with the And1 team, which is sponsored by Sprite, has allowed him to travel all throughout the globe spanning Mexico, Iceland, and Ethiopia. It was in Mexico where he received his greatest scare, when a drug cartel stalked the team for two weeks.
“It was exciting to see Werm in action,” said one anonymous teen. “I can’t believe I met him in person. I just saw him on national television playing for the Harlem Globetrotters not too long ago.”
