Leo Balserio was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Florida State University and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy at Barry University. Presently, Leo is studying to earn a Ph.D. in counselor education at Barry University. He is also a member of both the American Counseling Association and the Florida Counseling Association.
Prior to working at Inspirations For Youth And Families, Leo was a case manager in the mental health setting. As an Inspirations group therapist, he facilitates and creates the curriculum for group therapy sessions. He also leads various forms of groups for Inspirations teens, including process groups, tasks groups, psychoeducational groups and experimental groups. Through the sessions, the teens learn more about team building, communicating effectively, collaborating with others and various life skills.
One example of Leo’s group therapy sessions examines instant gratification vs. delayed gratification. During the session, clients take part in a hands-on activity in which they paint pottery, plant a seed and over time allow the plant to grow. This activity helps the teens realize that sometimes in life the benefit will come later instead of immediately.
